📘 How the math works (share with students)
1. Base Strength = each unit's number of troops × its power rating, added together.
2. Modifiers are percentages added up for each side: training, technology, espionage, leadership, morale and supply for both sides; fortifications, terrain and home ground for the defender; surprise and weather for the attacker; plus any event card or custom GM bonus.
3. Combat Power = Base Strength × (1 + total modifiers ÷ 100) × Fortune. Fortune comes from each side's d20 roll (a 20 is a Heroic Moment, a 1 is a Blunder).
4. The Result compares the two Combat Powers:
- 2 : 1 or more — Decisive victory (the loser is routed)
- 1.3 : 1 or more — Victory
- 1.1 : 1 or more — Narrow victory
- closer than that — Stalemate
5. Casualties start at 10% per side (more in big battles), rise for the weaker side and fall for the stronger side. A routed army loses an extra 15%.
Espionage ops: every side with spies rolls a d20. 15+ = success (a defender who succeeds cancels a surprise attack), 20 = enemy plans stolen (double bonus), 1 = spy captured (the bonus becomes a penalty). Fog cuts all espionage bonuses in half.
Next round: survivors carry over, the winner's morale rises one step and the loser's drops (two steps if routed).
